Sept 5, A Bag for Bob

Day 5

30 in 30 hosted by Leslie Saeta.

Bob is a friend, who along with his wife, have been extremely supportive and generous of their time to my husband and I. Bob is brilliant in finances and his wife, Judith is a marketing wiz. Together, they help us get through those areas that seem foreign to us at times.

When the Rockford Art Guild chose to paint bags as their fundraiser Bob bought my bag before I even began painting it. What support! Thanks Bob and Judith.

Alcohol Inks in Progress

I've been working on this alcohol ink during
the Rockton River Market.

This is before I remove the masking fluid.

After the masking fluid is removed.

I need to concentrate a bit more than I'm allowed  to do as I sit in my booth, so I will continue this in my studio. I'll start with some ink and then some color. I think I may reapply the masking fluid to the restaurant name and some stripes. It always amazes me how much I don't like these pictures at this point but the alcohol inks really let you work and change things until you come to a place you're happy with.

Preping For An Alcohol Ink City Scape

I'm starting a new Venice Alcohol ink.

The city views have much more detail than my flower inks and therefore require more planning and drawing.

Once I'm done with the drawing I use masking fluid
to white out and outline some of the details.

This takes a lot of time but it's worth it. I'll be able to apply the inks freely concentrating more on the patterns and combinations rather than "staying in the lines". This next phase is rather messy and I always feel as if "I messed up a perfectly good drawing" but it all works out in the end.

I'll start painting this tomorrow night at the Rockton River Market in Settlers Park. Come on down and join me.

The Canal

I'm having a lot of fun with alcohol inks this month. As I continue my Drive By series this is one of those pictures I just had to squeeze in. And no, there's no place like this in Rockford.

There's only one Venice!

What I like about alcohol inks is that you never really know how they're going to turn out. But I guess you could say that about any painting.

Beginning a Series of Alchol Inks

I'm starting a series of Alcohol Inks for
various shows that are coming up.
I love the bright, vivid colors they offer but even more I like that I don't always have control over what happens. These paints sometimes have a mind of their own, and sometimes they throw you an issue you just have to deal with. Sometimes it makes the painting better, sometimes it doesn't.

This week, I'll be working on a photo from Venice and also a Rockford chapel. The Venice picture is pretty complicated. By being very selective about where I put the masking fluid I hope I will have more definition left after applying the first layer of paint.

Yesterday, I ordered more art supplies, including more Yupo paper in 11" x14" and in a very large size, for me, 23" x 35". Some new colors are coming also; Tangerine, Calabaza Orange and Chile Pepper. (Don't their names sound great - sort of like Crayola names.) Alcohol inks are fairly simple to mix but a lot of these colors were "Italian palettes" as I'm pretty excited. I also think they'll be helpful for portraits which I haven't given up on.

Well on to all the other things I put off while doing the 30 in 30. I'm still painting each day, just not as much until I get some of these errands out of the way.

Day 3, Oils, Hotel Becher

30 in 30 hosted by Leslie Saeta.

Just to try something different, I painted today's painting as a I would a watercolor. That is; drawing my picture in pencil first then painting flat on the table instead of an easel. It was okay, a bit more comfortable maybe but not very practical if the canvas was much larger than 8 x10.

Day 18, Pastel, Lunch in St. Mark's Square

30 in 30 hosted by Leslie Saeta.

Lunch in St. Mark's Square
Pastels
9 x 11.25
$85

I've been holding on to this photograph for a long time, waiting for the time I could draw this scene. I love the row of chairs, the tuxedos, the band and all the people in the background. In the middle of all the tourists in their jeans and tennis shoes sits this lone woman is having a very elegant lunch.
