Day 11, January 30 in 30

Day 11, January 11

30 in 30 hosted by Leslie Saeta.

Today's picture is from an oil class at the art guild.
I love oils and want to spend more time working with them so the class just seemed like a great way to see how someone else's process.

Spotted Blue Bird
Oils

Before the snow hit the painting.
An interesting thing happened on the way to my car. It snowed. I didn't think a thing about it before, these are oils after all. But if you look closely at the above painting you will see little orange spots all over the painting. It took me awhile to figure it out but I think I know what happened. To prepare the boards, the instructor first painted them with orange house paint that she had around the house. House paints are water based. Then we painted with oil paint on top of that. It's just like salad dressing... oil and water don't mix. When the snow melted and became little drops of water, the water repelled the oil paint.

Actually, I think it looks very interesting. Although you would never want to sell something like this. But the lesson is oil and water don't mix.

HOWEVER, you CAN put acrylics on top of oil paints but never the other way around. Excellent lesson for a Saturday.

Day 29, Oils, Blended

30 in 30 hosted by Leslie Saeta.

Today I got the oils out again and enjoyed myself. This is a small abstract on an art board with some of that wonderful molding paste added for texture.

$20

For day 29 I wanted to get back to some of this month's paintings that I wanted to change when the paint dried.

Daylilies, Day 21;
I felt like the background of the fence was fighting with the flower too much.

Counterbalance, Day 23;
I wanted to add a lime green color to the painting and well, once I got started I couldn't stop.

Day 23, Oils, Counterbalance

30 in 30 hosted by Leslie Saeta.

I'm having a good time playing with abstracts. Multiple layers of paint and textures really interest me. I'm already thinking of adding another layer to this painting... a lemon green by the dark green sounds good. First this layer of paint needs to dry. I'll keep you posted.

I did a makeover of this painting on the last day. (1-30-15)

Day 21, Oils,Daylilies

30 in 30 hosted by Leslie Saeta.

This is the second painting for the Rockford Art Guild traveling show called Mosaic. It will debut February 20th at the Nicholson Conservatory. The show will feature the Art Guilds many artists and the 8 x 8 canvasses will be available for a good price. I'm hoping to pick up a few myself. I keep on seeing so many really talented artists not selling as much as they should be, myself included, so there is some really great works at really affordable prices.

Here's the thing with my paintings; most of the flower paintings are from my garden. This painting is no exception. I grow them, I photograph them - A LOT, then I paint them. I usually already have figured out composition at the time of shooting the photograph. So when I see a photo like this I like it as it is. The fence is now 16 years old and various colors of grey with moss growing on it, or whatever, gives it the green color. I love the texture contrast to the flowers. So I knew the fence was a little overpowering to the flower so I toned it down a bit, but Ugh! The fence is too much! I will be changing the background soon to something dark and much less active. Sometimes I just doesn't work just as we plan it. I will post the reworked painting when I'm done.

Day 18, Oils, Second Chances

30 in 30 hosted by Leslie Saeta.

Second Chances. We all need a second chance at some time. It can make all the difference.

Second Chances
Oils
12" x 12"
$60

This is an abstract that I reworked. I loved the texture of the original but found the colors to be too dark. I'm much happier with it this way.

Day 17, Oils, The Pond in Fall

30 in 30 hosted by Leslie Saeta.

Back to the oils and it sure feels good. I love the way the studio smells after a day of painting with oils.

This is painted from a picture taken last Fall at Pitlik's Sand Beach Resort. I loved how an orange tree was reflecting off of the water.

Day 3, Oils, Hotel Becher

30 in 30 hosted by Leslie Saeta.

Just to try something different, I painted today's painting as a I would a watercolor. That is; drawing my picture in pencil first then painting flat on the table instead of an easel. It was okay, a bit more comfortable maybe but not very practical if the canvas was much larger than 8 x10.

Day 1,Oils and Palette Knife, Pitlik's Duck

30 in 30 hosted by Leslie Saeta.

Happy New Year everyone! Doing a 30 in 30 is a great way to start the New Year! Again, no theme this time. I have too many things I want to try to narrow it down to a theme.

 Pitlik's Duck
Oil with Palette Knife
12" x 12"
$75

Last Fall my husband and I had the chance to visit Pitlik's Sand Lake Resort. It's a resort in Northern Wisconsin that his family had vacationed at from the 30's to the 70's.  It was great to see that the resort is thriving. We enjoyed a buffalo burger in the dinner area then walked around the grounds for a good look. My husband recounted many stories from his childhood as he pointed out where the "old" cabin used to be. While enjoying the view from the dock this duck approached us. It was if he was welcoming Mark back to Pitlik's after all these years.

Day 25, Oil Painting, Bachelor Button

30 in 30 hosted by Leslie Saeta.

Bachelor Button
Oils
12 x 12
$65

How great are bachelor buttons? They reseed themselves each year, bloom early then dry out and die. Even though they don't look so great when they dry out, one simply needs to weed out the dead plants so the next batch can bloom in it's place.

Day 22, Oil Painting, Autumn Leaves

30 in 30 hosted by Leslie Saeta.

Autumn Leaves
Oil Painting
12 x 12
$75

The end of summer is less painful with the promise of Autumn close by. For years I have tried to capture the colors in photographs but have never been able to do the leaves justice. The camera just can't duplicate the splendid color the eye sees.

Day 6, Oil, Garden Harvest

30 in 30 hosted by Leslie Saeta.

Garden Harvest
Oils
12 x12
$115

Here are some pears and tomatoes from this year's garden. The squash is from Edward's Apple Orchard. We have a lot of pears even though the tree hardly bloomed with the cold Spring we had. I guess it bloomed enough.

I love oils- everything about them; the smells, the texture of the paints, the way the canvas gives when you put a paintbrush to it, the shine of the paint, the way the pigments are serious - you get them on your clothes and they aren't leaving. Lately, I've been doing so many watercolors and pastels that I just haven't had time for the oils. Thanks 30 in 30 it was fun.

It’s Still, True the Best Gifts are the Ones You Make Yourself 2014-03-05 09:36

For Christmas my daughter, Bethannie gave both my husband and I paintings. I was so excited!  As many of you know my first daughter, Samantha is a very talented and skilled artist who is pursuing a career as a graphic artist.  Bethannie is not in art but a very talented scientist.  For a long time I have felt that art and science are very closely linked.  I come from a very scientific family and have found science to be extremely creative. In fact, my Father, a nuclear physist, was one of the most creative persons I know.  (I like to think I got my creativity from him.)  Anyway, Beth has always been the scientist, not doing much serious art- although, man could she collage when she was in high school and her science window painting did win her science club first place during homecoming week. Now, she pours a lot of her creativity into her cooking which she is incredible at. (Where did that come from?) A few years ago, she did take a painting class from which I was given a Van Gogh painting that she copied.

This year she did her own interpretation of Margo’s (Grandma’s) Poppies. This picture has so much meaning to my family because my mother is no longer here and now the garage and poppies are gone too.  I love the freeness of this oil painting which she painted entirely with knives.  The colors are bright and it appears as if she enjoyed herself while doing this. I’ll hang this in my office near my “Beth Gogh”.

For my husband she painted a picture of me. It’s a beautiful portrait with some wonderful brush strokes. (I was younger then.)

This is the liyhograph Samanthat agave me as a Mother's Day gift one year.

People often talk about how to raise artistically creative children. I guess if you would ask me what I think, I wouldn’t have too many suggestions. I think it’s important that you expose your children to the arts.  They should be exposed to all sorts works of art and artist. Allow them to experiement. They should see you in the process and enjoying it. I have never felt as if I wanted to push my children into art. One thing that I do know is that children have to feel SAFE to express themselves artistically.  By safe I mean they shouldn’t be criticized or made to feel that their work is not good. They should be allowed to make mistakes and taught to view them as learning experiences. Some may grow up wanting to pursue their artistic talent and some may just use art as an outlet and a way to feel good or to relax.  Either way is fine. Just never forget to remind them that their art for Christmas/birthdays etc. always makes a great gift.
