September 7,30 in 30

Day 7, 30 paintings in 30 days
 hosted by Leslie Saeta.

Today's piece comes from a project with the Rockford Art Guild. I have been a member of the guild for about 4 years. I joined shortly after I left my job to start painting daily. I thought I would need the socialization.

What I found was so much more. Our group of 50 members is an eclectic group of people of various mediums and ages. Not only did I meet some incredible people who I consider very good friends, but I learned a lot. That's the value of a guild, the sharing of experiences, the opportunities to try new things surrounded by people who are willing to guide you. Now that I have a bit of experience I hope that I can help others achieve their dreams.

The puzzle project, is a group project with hope as it's theme. There were about 30 pieces which were painted or drawn on by various guild members. There was some variety too; two people carved wood, one attached glass beads and one attached mosaic pieces. The pieces will be put together and given to the local cancer center.

I painted sunflowers on my piece. Big surprise? But I feel they are very cheerful and hopeful. and you know I love them.

September 1st, 30 in 30

Day 1 of the 30 in 30 hosted by Leslie Seata.

A lot of people choose themes for the 30 in 30. I don't like limiting myself that way.  Most of my paintings are from photographs I've taken. I have piles upon piles of photos I've taken in the yard, or on trips, etc. I always see the 30 in 30 as a way of getting to some of those photos. By the time another 30 in 30 rolls around there is always a ton paintings waiting to happen.

This was a commission. I had this painting that a client liked but she didn't want so much red and blue so I was able to work with her to do this painting.

Day 16, a Morning At Katie's Cup

January 16, 30 Paintings in 30 Days Hosted by Leslie Saeta.

Day 16: 3.5 hours, Monthly Total: 45.5 Hours

Had a wonderful morning a Katie's Cup in Rockford. I go there twice a month to paint. Sometimes I have people join me, sometimes not. Today I was alone. It was pretty slippery out there on the roads. No problem, I just get out my earplugs and get lost in my painting and the music. This is a piece I was working on for a home painting party Friday night.

30 in 30. September 1st, 2016

Welcome to day 1 of September's 30 in 30.  As always, this 30 in 30 is hosted by Leslie Saeta. (Thanks Leslie.) I'm writing my blog much later than usual because today I was out celebrating my daughter's birthday. It is just now at 11:15pm that I am slowing down and have time to make today's post. It seems like that was my theme for the summer... busy.  But it was a wonderful summer. The Fall is starting to look just as busy.

Talking about themes...
Many people choose themes for their 30 in 30. I do not. There are so many things I want to paint and to do that a 30 in 30 seems like purging myself of all the projects and ideas that I have been putting off. So what do I want to accomplish this month? I'd like to have a series of 8 x 10's in alcohol inks ready to go as class ideas, smaller paintings that are more affordable for those who visit my booth during shows. I'd also like to explore a bit and try a few new things. I have four commissions to do this month and am hoping to work on those this month along with four new Drive Bys. We'll see.

I haven't tired of doing sunflowers yet. I love their cheerful brightness. They are one of my most popular classes. I never tire of sitting down and painting this painting. It's different each time.

Unforgettable Art; 13th Annual Affair for Alzheimers

Ever since the farmer who sold sunflowers moved into the booth next to mine at the Rockton River Market last summer, I have been painting sunflowers. You might say I'm a bit obsessed with them. And for good reason! They're not only beautiful but they seem to make people happy. I have loved having people paint sunflowers in my classes because the variety of colors and shapes. Relatively speaking, they're a pretty easy flower to paint and my students always seem happy with their outcomes. We've been painting sunflowers on Yupo paper, canvas and plates.

So when it was time to decide what to paint for this Saturday's Unforgettable Art, an affair to benefit Alzheimer's, sunflowers were the obvious answer. At Unforgettable each artist is given 8 hours to complete a painting and have it dry and ready for action by 8PM. It can be kind of stressful so I try to come to the event well prepared by having planned and painted the painting a few times before the event.

So far, I have painted 3 paintings in preparation and plan to do one more run through tomorrow just to be sure. Why am I spending so much time on this? Well it helps to have the composition figured out ahead of time. And  there's some pretty impressive artists painting on that day, I just want to make sure I can keep up with them. Any practice pieces can be sold at shows or in a gallery so the time is well spent... and it's fun!

By the second week of painting this it became pretty clear that I didn't have the time to reproduce this painting in 7 hours or so.  So, I simplified the painting.

For my 4th painting I'm returning to a composition similar to the second painting - August Afternoon but there will be a few more flowers and the yellow sunflower won't be as big.

I'll let you know how it all turns out. Either way, I'm sure it will be a wonderful event, as it was last year. I will be surrounded by some great friends.... chocolate and wine. Mark and Matt ( my cheering team) will arrive at 6pm with the rest of the guests. It all seems to work out in the end and it sure is fun and all for a great cause!

Hope to see you there.
You must buy tickets in advance.

Last post I spoke about a schedule.
Well that's been kinda shot but I am managing to get done the things I need to so far.
I still have my schedule but have been busy with house guest and Easter dinners.

I dropped off 10 pieces to 317 Studio & Gallery this morning for the Spring Art Scene. I'm so looking forward to it. It was kinda cool to drop off my pieces knowing  that's it - I don't have to prepare anything else for Art Scene.

I have been working out my piece for Unforgettable on April 23rd. I thought this would be a nice painting. And it would be IF I could do it in 6 hours. It's more of a 6 day painting. So, I have simplified  my design.

I found these wonderful canvasses that come framed at Michael's. I thought they'd be great for Unforgettable. This is a possibility. Although I did not sit down and complete this in 6 hours, it certainly is something I could do. I feel like the yellow flower is too large for this composition so again I will tweak the design a bit.

I am continuing to work with my client on the perfect design for her abstract commission piece.

Growing Pains

Things have started picking up a bit for me.

There are more commissions, classes and opportunities to show my work. Great ha? Yikes... it has meant that I need to pick up the pace a bit. Add that to the loss of my assistant and I'm having a hard time with the internet  and marketing.

Yellow Orchids at Nicholas

I've been playing with my schedule - waiting until the afternoon before I answer emails and post works. It makes great sense on paper but in reality it's not working so well.  In the evening I'm rushing downstairs to make dinner and feed the dogs by 7PM. Oh well, I'll keep plugging at this. The big push is to create 4 or 5 new works by March 29th for Spring Art Scene. Art scene is April 15 &16th. It's usually not such a push for so many new pieces but this Spring I will be showing with 317 Studio & Gallery and they will be keeping my works until October. Yeah for having pieces in a gallery for that long! Yikes for the beginning of show season and having to give up 10 original pieces.

This piece is taking far too long to be a design for Unforgettable, but it will be great for Art Scene.

So, I'm just plugging away.
Working on new pieces, playing with a commission and designing my piece for Unforgettable Art, An Affair to Benefit Alzheimer's (April 23rd).

Still playing with the design for this mixed media commission.

RAG at the Nicholas Conservatory

Last Saturday was the Rockford Art Guild's
 show at the Nicholas Conservatory.

As luck would have it, they had a tree out of blushing bromeliads to sell as a fundraiser

My Blushing Bromeliads looked just right to the side of the display.

Nicholas has their Orchid show running at the same time.
I always love to go and load up on some inspiration for new art.

Off to the studio to do some work!

Great Party last Night Ladies!

I love going into a group of people who start out with... "I don't have an artistic bone in my body."
What is it about art that scares people so much? It's like math. I hear a lot of "I can't do math." (Or at least I did when I worked at the Alternative School.)

Well the truth is, of course everyone can do art. It's like this wonderful, joyous gift we were all born with. It's in us all, even you. The trick is to make people feel safe and maybe a bit confident too.

When you get a group of friends together, some nibbles, a bit of wine who knows what the possibilities can be?  Last night was no exception. These lovely ladies support each other at work each day - encouraging each other last night was just an extension of that.

And of course, they didn't come for the food, or the wine, or even the art. They came to be with each other and have a bit of fun. They were bound to have fun no matter what their plates looked like. I'm so thrilled that they allowed me to be a part of their group for a few hours.

I love that alcohol inks have their own "minds" in a sense. If you don't fight them and work with them, eventually they will produce some pattern or texture you will like. They are very "forgiving" in that mistakes can easily be wiped away.

The ladies dug right in and the results were stunning. Everyone produced such a unique piece.

Two friends couldn't come. One had a funeral and one a birth. Kind of unusual, but sure does bring home the point about how important it is to love those around us and spend time together. And at the end of the night, as we were about to pose for our final picture, new photos of the baby came streaming through the phone.

The ladies produced some beautiful plates but more important: another successful night of bonding. I'm so honored to have spent the evening with each and every one of them.

Pics From 317 Class

I held another class last Thursday. What fun!

 The world is filled with
such creative people.

We are capable
of such beauty.

Such an important thing to remember when humans in the world sometimes look so inhumane.

I am grateful for the beauty that is in all of us.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone.
