These lovelies are from my garden. This is a painting I was working on last June. I just couldn't figure out how to paint this. Then all of a sudden yesterday I knew what to do. Paintings are funny that way. You can't rush them. They are created when they are ready to exist.

30 Days Come and Gone

I remember being a young girl when my mother would comment about how fast the time has passed. I thought she was nuts. "Time doesn't pass quickly!", I would reply. But now that I am older, I realize she's right. It's gone in a blink of an eye. And thus the January 30 in 30 is over. It was great fun and I have enjoyed making some new art and some new friends.

I still have an alcohol ink that needs to be finished which I hope to complete this next week along with a mini series of Rockford in alcohol inks. But for today, I need to get back to some book keeping, bill paying and oh yeah, that newsletter that I promised everyone would be out at the end of January. Day 28, Pastels, Jardin des Tuileries

Sorry to do a work in progress two days in a row but I couldn't help myself. I've been looking at this photograph for a few years now and have wanted to paint it. I'm interested in putting more people in my works. For me, this is a large pastel piece, 11" x 17". I felt that there was so much going on in this picture that it had to be big.

The Rockford Art Guild put forth a challenge for this month; use the theme of friendship. There are several kinds of friendships here; people you work with, family members, long time friends and acquaintances. This is a park cafe in Paris on a beautiful May day. I spent a lot of time with the background because I think it is so important to the story. The waiters fascinate me as do the cooks that are indicated only by their black outlines. I love the way the sun shines through the kitchenette revealing the park on the other side.

Day 26, Watercolors, Work in Progress

I have some watercolors that I have been working on for a long time. It's hard to paint everyday and not work on them. So yesterday I gave myself a treat and I worked on my Lily painting. It still has quite a ways to go and I 'm still figuring out the background - although I think I know what I want to do.

I was struggling with where to put my I pod while I painted. My husband bought me an I Pad clamp for my work desk. It can stand freely, or attach to a tripod. I'm loving it! I can paint and easily change Pandora channels or check social media quickly.

Day 22, Watercolors, My Day in the Garden

What a wonderful day I had yesterday. It started with painting at Katie's Cup, just me, Pandora Radio, the fireplace, and the view of the snow falling outside the window. There were other people around  too, having their business meetings or working on their computers. I realized that I just love painting around people, not as a voyeuristic thing, but more as an inclusive thing. It's like I'm in my own little world but still apart of the crowd. It feels right.

 I love painting my garden in the winter. It's my way of reminding myself that the warm weather is coming. It made yesterday all the more special. Being my birthday, my husband took me out to lunch and made me a wonderful steak dinner at night. I loved getting all the well wishes during the day and I couldn't help thinking just how lucky I am to be surrounded by such wonderful people and loved so well. How terrific it is that I got to spend my day just perfectly... painting and with family. 

How blessed we all are, that those we love from so far away are visible on Facebook or other social media or just a Skipe call away.

But the one thing you can count on with alcohol inks are bright, vibrant colors. I love the way the colors mix and make patterns. This is our honeysuckle bought in a box from Walmart 15 years ago. I never thought it would survive but it did more than that. It thrived, and is a favorite of many hummingbirds in the summer.

Okay! I admit it! I was watching Ohio State take the championship last night instead of working on my 30 in 30. But, what a great game it was! So exciting. ( I was spending quality time with these two if that counts.)

A Work in Progress

This is one of my all time favorite photographs. Matthew will be 18 next month. Where did all that time go? In this picture, the boys had spent the day on the lake and their hair was a mess from the wind. They were tired but happy. Because I choose to watch the game last night I ran out of time to work on this so I'm posting it as a work in progress. I wanted to finish it today but you know, I was forcing it. That's never a good thing. So I will move on and come back to it latter. Will post it when I get back to it.

This year marks the Rockford Art Guild's 60th anniversary. One of the celebrations planned is a traveling show of 60 canvasses painted to honor Rockford. I am painting two of those and thought the 30 in 30 would be a great way to get it done - no procrastinating here. This is my first one.

Greenwood Chapel

The Greenwood Chapel was designed by Chicago architect Henry Lord Gay and was built in 1891. Have I mentioned that I love cemeteries? I do. I don't know if it's the love of genealogy, or psychology or just that my Mother loved cemeteries too. But, I find them terribly interesting. My Aunt Dorothy gives a historical tour of the Devereaux cemetery pointing out the many relatives who are interned there. I was able to find most of the past owners of the Union house that my husband is renovating just a few blocks away in the Rockton cemetery.

I made a decision while doing this painting. I really don't care for acrylics. The colors are dull and they dry so fast that there is no time to blend neighboring colors on the canvas. I think they are great when one is trying to do a painting in one sitting and will continue to use them through out the 30 in 30, but now I know - back to my oils.

There are so many pictures from our travels that I have held on to for years thinking someday I'm going to paint that. 
 No better time than now.

This is one of those pictures. It's 6,7 years old? Some of these pictures I wasn't sure what medium to do them in. Gosh, 6 years ago I didn't know what Alcohol Inks where. Anyway, I'm enjoying doing some of the Italian pictures. I listen to Italian music and it brings me right back to the trip. Too fun!

While I work on the French drawings  I'm listening to Duo Gadjo Radio on Pandora. Try it, it's yummy!

Well, time to get back to work! I've fallen behind a day.

I continued to work with the modeling paste trying to figure out how I want to use it. Today I worked on an abstract landscape after coming back from hanging works at Emerson House with two other artists. I felt inspired by their work.

I saw this as a mountain landscape. Thinking that it needed something, I added the red. I like it on the left but feel I overdid it in the center and also feel that signing my name in red was a bit much, maybe purple? I hope to come back to this after living with it for awhile and making a few changes. But as for the 30 in 30 onward and upward.

Two years ago my feeders were visited by a flock of

cardinals consisting of 12 males and 12 females.  

It was beautiful - I couldn't believe it! I took pictures with plans to paint them and also, I didn't think anyone would believe me. It turns out that they were more difficult to photograph than I thought and quite honestly the feeders weren't all that attractive. Anyway this is what I came up with . It was first time doing snow in pastels.
